In 1900 an Audubon member, Frank Chapman, proposed a bird-friendly and environmentally friendly alternative to the annual Christmas bird hunt- counting birds instead of killing them. This became the famous Christmas Bird Count. Similarly, I think the time has come for us to look at a new paradigm for competitive birding, utilizing localized and thus more sustainable, bird counts. Perhaps each National or State Park or Wildlife Reserve could host its own competitive Bird Count- who can find the most birds within the park boundaries in 24 hours, or within a week's time.This approach would consume less fossil fuels, and be less destructive to wildlife habitat in the search for more fossil fuels, than current jet-setting Big Year counts. Those of us who treasure the natural world need to take the lead in promoting environmentally sustainable practices, such as localized birding over an extended time frame, rather than extensive air or road travel over long distances in short amounts of time.
